Subject: Getting to know me better
Dear Professor Bradstone,
I hope this email finds you in good spirits. My name is Chua Yi Zhe. I am currently a Year 1 student, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering at Singapore Institute of Technology. The purpose of this email is to do a short introduction of myself and to give you a better insight of my background and goals in the future.
Before attending Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), I had previously studied at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where I graduated with a Diploma in Audio-Visual Technology Engineering. Although this program was focused on the audio, visual and staging industry, I had obtained some basic knowledge of electrical engineering related to my field of study. This made me passionate about engineering as I learned that in every aspect of life, a form of engineering is needed. After graduation, I needed a change of pace and therefore chose to dwell into the study of civil engineering.
One of my strengths in communication is empathy. I am able to understand and address the emotions and perspectives of others. Being able to understand someone else's perspective or thought process, even if we don't share their emotions is very important. However, I recognise that my writing skills can sometimes lack conciseness, as seen in my reports back in polytechnic where feedback was highlighted.
There are two goals I aim to achieve during my time in SIT. Firstly, I definitely want to improve on my writing ability as it is an essential skill to create precise and professional documents. Secondly, I wish to also be well skilled in public speaking and having confidence when I speak in front of a large crowds and audiences.
What sets me apart from others is my curiosity and my crave for knowledge, I am always willing to learn and am not afraid to tell others what I know and don't know. Outside of academics, I enjoy the nightlife of Singapore. I'm always looking to have a good time with friends or even meet new people from all walks of life.
In conclusion, I am looking forward to my new life in SIT, enhancing my academic and communication skills. I appreciate you taking the time to read my email and learn more about me.
Yours sincerely,
Chua Yi Zhe

Hi Nic,
DeleteAppreciate the feedback and you taking the time to read my self introduction. Looking forward to studying with you as well in SIT. All the best!
Dear Yi Zhe,
ReplyDeleteThank you for this clear and fairly concise letter, which basically addresses the points of the brief.
You also share something about your comm skills levels, for example, your strength in empathizing with others and the difficulty you say you have with writing. What would make this stronger is for you to provide illustrations of both.
Your journey to CVE from audio engineering is well explained and interesting.
I look forward to working with you more this term.
Best wishes,
Brad
