 Task 3: The Importance of Communication Skills for Engineers


I felt particular importance in this quote: 

"Communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students' education but also to prepare them for their future careers." 

Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007)


The way I derived this quote is that it's not only important to be proficient in a student's course of study but also be able to have good communication skills in their field of work. The way we could prepare for the workforce is to start developing and improving during our education and in classes. Being confident and impressionable is an important part of communication skills, in which could be a good way of making new connections and meeting new people, and of course having two thinking minds is better than one. Being future engineers, having connections and friends in the industry is always an advantage. If I'm stuck with a problem, I would love to get a different opinion or someone to help me with engineering problems. All in all, communications is a key factor in not only our future careers but also our education currently.

Ideal: To attend lectures and class more often Reality (Gap): I often miss classes especially when it's in the morning Causes: Unable to wake up early in the morning/oversleeping Effects: I miss out on important information given by lecturers Goals: Be able to attend all my classes Possible Changes: Rest earlier the night before/Stop using electronic devices after a certain time before bed Testing the hypothesis: Decided to keep my phone locked away before bed to get a better rest Outcome: Able to sleep earlier and therefore able to attend all my morning classes
